Changing The Clocks Can Trigger Emotional Disruption

February 28, 2024

The twice-a-year practice of changing the clocks from Standard Time to Daylight Savings Time is often debated but persists despite occasional movements to end this ritual. Those who favor keeping the clocks set at the same time year-round cite a number of disruptive effects to their emotions. The therapist at North Shore recognizes the impact of this sudden overnight change, and wants to offer some tips for making the transition a bit easier.

One common emotional consequence of the switch to DST is sudden changes in mood, according to the National Sleep Foundation. This can lead to sadness, fatigue, and irritability. The hour of sleep that’s lost when we "spring forward" can disrupt established sleep patterns, leading to sleep deprivation, which can affect mood regulation and energy levels

If you are susceptible to seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression linked to seasonal changes, DST transitions can worsen symptoms like low mood, social withdrawal, and changes in appetite and sleep patterns, according to the Mayo Clinic.

It’s suggested to gradually adjust your sleep schedule in the days leading up to the time change in 15-minute increments to ease your body into the new rhythm. Making sure you’re getting plenty of natural sunlight during the day will help regulate your circadian rhythm and bolster your mood. Staying active and exercising regularly are also vital to improving your mood and energy level.

If you’re experiencing persistent periods of sadness, fatigue, irritability, social isolation and aren’t deriving pleasure from activities you formerly enjoyed, these may be symptoms of depression for which therapy can be beneficial. Therapy provides a safe, confidential, nonjudgemental space for exploring the underlying causes that may be at the root of the emotions you’re experiencing. Together with North Shore we can explore solutions to attaining a satisfying, joyful life, free of obstacles that may be holding you back. Please contact us today to arrange a confidential consultation.
