Do Any of These Signs of an Eating Disorder Describe You?

December 29, 2022

For some people, the quest for what they’re convinced is an ideal body image can take a dangerous turn when it manifests into any one of several eating disorders that can severely affect your emotional and physical well-being. We’re here to help.

At the office of North Shore, our compassionate, highly skilled staff will perform a thorough evaluation, gently address any of your fears or concerns, and guide you on a comprehensive treatment plan to restore your nutritional health. We’ll also help you recognize the value of gaining realistic expectations of your own body, which will enhance your self-image.

Women are more at risk than men of developing an eating disorder, the most common of which are anorexia (being unusually or dangerously thin) and bulimia (eating and then purging). Symptoms usually begin during adolescence and early adulthood and include:

  • Rapid weight loss or frequent changes in weight
  • Constant adherence to increasingly strict diets, regardless of your weight
  • Feeling tired and having little energy
  • Signs of damage due to vomiting— including damage to teeth, bad breath, and swelling around the cheeks or jaw
  • Frequently feeling cold, even in warm weather
  • Trips to the bathroom immediately after eating
  • Secretly bingeing on and hoarding large amounts of food
  • Increased use of laxatives, diuretics or diet pills
  • Compulsive exercising, often several hours per day
  • Using prescription stimulant medications to suppress appetite

Medications in combination with therapy to address underlying emotional issues are commonly used in treatment because eating disorders are complex and multi-faceted.

The office of North Shore is your trusted partner in care. Your health and well-being are our top priorities. If you are suffering from an eating disorder, we encourage you to take that first step in your journey to recovery. Please call us today to arrange an appointment. You’ll be glad you did.
