Warning Signs That Your Child May Need Therapy

September 23, 2020

Child therapy is not always an easy topic for parents to discuss. With the stigma of mental health, they don’t want their child to actually need to talk to a professional counselor. But the reality is that therapy can change lives for the better. Whether your child is dealing with traumatic issues or struggling to cope in everyday situations, qualified professionals can make all the difference.

At Remote Pediatrics, the emotional well-being of your child is our top priority. Our trained and compassionate professionals are ready to help — through dialogue, encouragement, and coping strategies designed to ease feelings of stress, anxiety and hopelessness.

All kids have emotional ups and downs — periods of moodiness, trouble with friends and dips in academic performance. It’s part of normal childhood development. But warning signs that may signal something more serious and professional help is warranted include if your child:

  1. has problems in multiple areas of life, such as family relationships, academic performance, leisure activities and friendships
  2. starts feeling bad about himself or herself, less confident or less effective
  3. shows excessive worry about the future
  4. expresses hopelessness
  5. withdraws from family, friends or activities he or she used to enjoy
  6. has a significant change in sleep habits or appetite
  7. engages in negative behavior more frequently
  8. talks about or engages in any kind of self-harm; talks about suicide
  9. makes comments like “I wish I weren’t here,” or “Nobody would care if I ran away.”

As parents, you should let your gut be your guide. You know your child best. If something just doesn’t feel right, trust that instinct. It’s better to have your child be professionally evaluated if you are not sure if there’s a real problem.
