Social Media Use Causing Anxiety? Here’s What To Do

August 28, 2024

Social media has become a nearly ubiquitous presence in our lives, connecting, informing, and entertaining us. A recent study indicated that nearly two-thirds of Americans use these platforms. But along with its benefits come a steady stream of false and unrealistic portrayals that can negatively affect a user’s mental health. The therapist North Shore would like to delve into the risk of anxiety attached to oversaturation of social media, and how to set boundaries to protect your mental health,

Among the negative aspects of social media:

  • Online harassment and cyberbullying, which contribute to anxiety and isolation;
  • Comparing our everyday lives to unrealistic online presentations of others, increasing anxiety and lowering self-esteem;
  • Constant updates creating Fear of Missing Out (known as FOMO): which can stoke feelings of inadequacy and exclusion.

Here are a few strategies for mindful use of social media:

  • Set boundaries around your social media use by considering designated times to check apps — and stick to those limits, counsels the American Psychological Association.
  • Carefully manage your feed by unfollowing accounts that are triggering negative emotions. Seek out accounts that inspire and uplift your mood, the APA suggests.
  • Social media can be a convenient way of connecting, but not at the expense of face-to-face interactions with friends and family.
  • Don’t let social media district you from the present moment. It’s suggested to put your phone away during meals, while having a conversation with a friend or family member, or while enjoying live activities such as a play, movie, sporting event, or concert.

Although there's no universally accepted definition, social media addiction is a growing concern. If anxiety connected to your use of social media is beginning to feel overwhelming, please contact our therapist at North Shore. We offer a confidential, nonjudgmental space to explore your feelings and seek a balance between real-life and online connections. Please contact us today to schedule a consultation.
