Could You Be Depressed? See If Any of These Symptoms Apply To You.

June 26, 2023

Depression can sneak up on your when an accumulation of events and/or thoughts roll into a ball of emotional decline. You sometimes don’t even notice depression’s stealth presence. But some signs can identify its existence, and a therapist can help you climb out of it.

North Shore collaborates with patients and focuses on personal growth. We will identify and discuss the strengths you already have and then apply new knowledge and self-awareness to achieve greater insight into your goals and objectives. You’ll gain better control over your ability to balance your emotions and achieve your desired outcomes in your relationships and life.

Shopping benders. You frequently go on buying sprees, accumulating things you don’t need. Deep down, you know you shouldn’t be spending the money, but the “high” you get supersedes it. You need the distraction or boost in self-esteem. In the end, though, you’re still depressed and stuck with a bunch of stuff that wasted your money.

You’ve got “brain fog” or are forgetful. Long-time stress or depression tends to raise your body’s level of cortisol, the primary stress hormone, which can suppress the area of your brain that controls learning and memory.

You shoplift. Depression is common among 30 percent of the people who grab “five-finger discounts.” It makes you feel powerful and important, and the “rush” counters your depression.

You binge on the Internet. The excess time distracts you from your negative feelings. It’s especially true if you’re on gaming, online community and pornography sites.

You’re unkempt. You used to care about how you look, but now your hair is askew, your clothes are rumpled, you’re overdue for a shower or it’s been a while since you brushed your teeth. If you have any chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease, you don’t tend to them.

You eat, gamble or drink alcohol too much. Eating is necessary and you can gamble and drink responsibly, but you could be depressed if you do any of them in excess.
