Stop Living With the Pain of a Panic Disorder

April 26, 2022

Few experiences in life are more disconcerting than having a panic attack. The abrupt incident of penetrating fear activates intense physical reactions when there’s no true danger or obvious cause. You might feel as if you’re having a heart attack, losing control or even dying. People with panic disorder have persistent and sudden attacks. They spend an inordinate amount of time in constant fear of another attack.

North Shore collaborates with patients and focuses on personal growth. We will identify and discuss the strengths you already have and then apply new knowledge and self-awareness to achieve greater insight into your goals and objectives. You’ll gain better control over your ability to balance your emotions and achieve your desired outcomes in your relationships and life.

Here are three ways to head off a pending panic attack.

Stay in the present. Notice your surroundings. For example, if you’re in the departure lounge at an airport, look at other travelers’ clothing and decide which outfits you like. Pick out three people and hypothesize where they’re going and why. Visit the sundry shops. Your mind will be diverted from ominous thoughts when you focus on what’s going on around you.

Stop speculating. Panic attacks are fueled by negative hypotheses that start with “What if..?” Tame the fear by acknowledging it and changing “What if…?” to “So what if…?” Worst-case scenarios are usually not as terrible as they seem.

Talk to yourself. When you feel a panic attack cropping up, take away its power by recognizing it. Tell yourself, “I’m feeling really anxious.” Your negative feelings will start to diffuse. Identify if you’re tired, angry, lonely and/or hungry. These sensations can bring out the worst in just about anyone, and if you have a panic disorder, one or more can be triggers. If you are indeed feeling one or more of the above, take steps to resolve them.

North Shore’s reputation for excellence is based on providing experienced and compassionate care with an unparalleled level of skill to give our patients the very best treatment results. For more information about our services, give us a call today. Let’s start a conversation.
